Mid-Year Financial Review for EU Freelancers: Your June Checklist
June is the perfect moment to assess your financial health for the year so far and adjust your strategy for a strong second half. Here's your complete review framework.
Why the Mid-Year Review Is Your Most Important Financial Habit
Most freelancers do one financial review per year: at tax time, when they're scrambling to compile numbers under deadline. This reactive approach means missed opportunities to course-correct, optimize tax positions, or capitalize on unexpectedly strong performance. A mid-year review in June gives you six months of actual data and six months of runway to act on what you find.
The goals of a mid-year review are straightforward: understand where you stand financially, compare reality to your plans, identify risks and opportunities, and make decisions that improve your second-half outcome. Two to three hours now could save you thousands of euros and considerable stress in December.
Revenue Analysis: Actuals vs Plan
Pull your first-half revenue data from Arbeitly's invoicing records. Compare total invoiced revenue against your annual target (50% of annual target would be on track). Break it down by client and service type: which revenue streams have grown, which have shrunk, and which have disappeared entirely? This analysis tells you where to invest sales energy in H2.
Also calculate your revenue concentration risk. If one client accounts for more than 30% of your revenue, that dependency is a vulnerability worth addressing in the second half. Diversification should become a strategic priority regardless of how comfortable the current relationship feels.
Expense Review and Cost Optimization
Review every expense from January through June. Categorize by type: software subscriptions, professional development, marketing, equipment, insurance, travel, and accountant fees. For each category, ask: is this expense generating proportionate value? Have I used every tool I'm paying for?
Cancel or downgrade any subscription unused in the last 60 days. Review insurance coverage to ensure it still matches your actual risk profile. Check whether professional development investments are being put to use — paid courses that sit unwatched are pure waste.
Tax Position Review
Calculate your estimated taxable profit for the year based on H1 actuals and H2 projections. Compare this to any quarterly tax deposits or advance payments already made. Are you on track, underpaying, or overpaying? Adjust your H2 tax savings rate accordingly so you're not surprised by a large bill in spring.
Check your VAT position separately. If you're VAT-registered, verify that all VAT collected has been remitted and that your input VAT claims are up to date. Review whether any major H2 purchases could be timed to optimize quarterly VAT returns.
Setting H2 Financial Goals
Based on your H1 review, set specific financial targets for July through December. Not vague aspirations — specific numbers. Use your product finances dashboard to set monthly revenue targets and check your progress weekly throughout H2. Visibility drives accountability.
