Why July Is the Right Time for a Mid-Year Review

January is the time for goal-setting. July is the time for honest reckoning. You're now halfway through the year with six months of actual data — revenue, client wins and losses, project successes and challenges, time invested and wasted. This data is infinitely more valuable for adjustment decisions than the aspirational projections of January. A July retrospective uses this data to recalibrate the second half of the year with eyes-open realism rather than early-year optimism.

The retrospective mindset is curious rather than judgmental. You're not grading yourself — you're learning from what happened and using that learning to make better decisions from August onward.

Financial Review

Open your financial dashboard and pull your year-to-date revenue. Compare it against your January target for the full year. If you're on track or ahead, identify what's working and double down. If you're behind, identify the gap's primary cause: insufficient project volume, lower rates than anticipated, higher-than-expected project-level costs, or a client loss that wasn't replaced.

Review your revenue by client: what percentage comes from your top client? If more than 40-50% of your revenue comes from a single client, your business has a concentration risk that warrants active diversification in the second half. Review your revenue by project type: are your highest-margin work types growing or shrinking as a share of total revenue?

Client Relationship Audit

Review each current client relationship honestly. Which clients are generating energy and producing excellent work? Which are consuming disproportionate time and energy relative to their revenue contribution? Which relationships have grown stronger this year and which have stagnated or weakened?

Make deliberate decisions about second-half client mix based on this audit. Which clients do you want to deepen? Which do you want to gracefully wind down or replace with better-fit clients? These decisions, made intentionally in July, are far better than reactive decisions made in October when a problematic client relationship has cost you months of energy and opportunity.

Skills and Capabilities Review

Compare your current capabilities against the skills that generated the most value and demand in the first half. Which skills are clients requesting that you don't yet have? Which certifications or training investments delivered real returns? What would make you significantly more valuable to your best clients in the second half?

Set one specific learning objective for August through December with a completion date and a practical application target. A learning objective with no application plan produces knowledge that never becomes capability.

Operating Systems Review

Review your core operating systems: invoicing accuracy and timeliness, time tracking consistency, contract discipline, follow-up protocols, and administrative overhead. Identify the one system that has caused the most friction or lost you the most time in the first half. Redesign or replace it before August rather than carrying the dysfunction through the rest of the year.
